The King of Zen (excerpt from "Splendid Isolation")

In youth, you will seek an empire just

Empowered by your naive lust

To do everything that you think you must

Without ever knowing whom to trust

Success will surely come your way

The question is only what price you’ll pay

Be careful with the games you play

Karma will catch up with you, come what may

Realize, no matter how hard you try

No matter, whether you laugh or cry

Eventually, all good things will die

If the foundation is based upon a lie

Someday, when you have all you need

And yet your insides seem to bleed

You’ll seek penance for your reckless greed

And some of these words, perhaps you’ll heed

When you are humble, not arrogant and vain

When you cease to think in terms of loss or gain

When you can love one who treats you with disdain

When you can feel no anger and feel no pain

When you can give up what you hold most dear

When you no longer operate out of fear

When you are not ashamed to shed a tear

When you know your conscience is completely clear

When your life revolves around more than you

When truth is the foundation for all you do

When you can tell whose love is really true

When you can solve this riddle without a clue

Only then, are you truly free

Regardless, of what might be

You are the envy of your fellow men

You are The Master – The King of Zen
